I have received exactly two hate mails since I started this site. I have the same response to both. It is twofold: 1. You have control of your own eyeballs. If you don't like what I have to say, click that little house on the top of your browser window and go home. 2. Beau over at YouParkLikeCrap sent this car over my way. At first I wasn't seeing a whack car. I REALLY like the new Charger. It is, in my humble opinion, the best offering from Dodge in recent years. The reasons this one is whack are very subtle.

1. Mismatched Fiberglass Hood

This hood doesn't match the body - but not just because the hood hasn't been painted - it just doesn't fit the car.

2. Blacked Out Headlights

In the best of situations, blacked out headlights just seem stupid. "Hey, let's give my car worse night visibility! YEAH!" If anything, those lame fog lights at least have a purpose.

3. Christian FIsh + Blacked Out Taillights

Not that faith background matters here, but I am a Christian AND I hate those fish. But the real reason I hate the rear view of this car is the blacked out back lenses. They are lame. They now equate to "I can't see you; you can't see me!"

4. Rims Too Small

I am constantly complaining about rims too big for one's car, but rims too small are just as bad. Here is the perfect example.

Starsky and Hutch as a movie and a TV show as garbage, but the car is excellent. I wouldn't actually want to own it, but it screams with coolness.

4. Better off Dead Camaro

The movie opens with Lane driving around his mom's old hooptie station wagon. Everything in his life is going to hell. Then he meets a french girl and she helps him restore his Camaro. His life then turns around. A girl and a car is all it takes when that car is a 1967 Camaro.

This car is so cool, it even has it's own website - BetterOffDeadCamaro.com! This car has such appeal, the guy hired private investigators to track it down so he could buy and restore it.

3. Eleanor II in Gone in 60 Seconds

This is the car that made me remember how awesome American cars could be. I had been lusting over classic Volkswagens and current BMWs before this movie came out and, all of a sudden, I HAD to have a Mustang. I never bought one, but this movie really made me want one.

2. Bumblebee Camaro from Transformers

I know there probably shouldn't be two Camaros on the list, but this is a crazy cool car! There is a good chance this car could be terrible when it comes out but, from what I understand, the chassis is the same as a Holden Monaro - one heck of a car - so it could be decent.

In honor of Jerry Reed's death yesterday, Smokey and the Bandit will top the list. Bandit's car isn't just a beautiful car, it also represents a lifestyle - a lifestyle of freedom and independence. One look at this car (if one has seen the movie) will bring images of running from the cops and winning... well, that is a bad idea, but you know what I mean. A 70s Trans-Am is one of the sweetest cars in movie history - at least this one is.

On display at the 2008 auto shows, the Mitsubishi RA really made waves. Although I would imagine the Lambo doors would be one of the first things to go. Is it possible that RA might be a planned eclipse replacement?

2. Buick Invicta

Set to be the replacement for the LaCrosse, this car looks like a very nice car and a major departure for Buick. However, the Invicta looks way too similar to a Lexus IS250.

Ford Fiesta Hot Rod

In my travels in Southern California, I get to see a lot of 'interesting' cars along the way. This one, from far away, looked like nothing special. Then, as I got closer, I realized the amazing features of this car.

1. Hand-painted racing stripes.

The racing stripes on this fine automobile are hand painted, possibly with latex paint from Home Depot. That is what it looks like anyway. The lines are very uneven and flat like latex paint.

2. Sweet bike rack on back.

Do you think it might act as a spoiler? Many of the cars I find have spoilers for when they go really fast. Do you think this might work like a DIY spoiler? Much like this one?

3. Coffee-can tailpipe.

Coffee-can tailpipe to draw out the last few horsepower from its beast of an engine. Awesome!

I Hate Neons, Volume 1

10. New Beetle

Looking around at who is driving the new Beetle, it is not hippie-type folks. It is moms. Moms and dorky middle-management types. When I first saw the new Beetle, I thought it was pretty cool, but so did every other uncool person. That seems to be who is driving it now.

Does anyone remember the original purpose of the Beetle? Volkswagen means the "People's Car." To me, People's Car means low-priced. It meant low-priced when the first Beetle arrived in the US - it was $1500! In today's money, a mere $10,500. That is a far cry from the near $18,000 the new Beetle costs.

When you add it up, the New Beetle equals lame.

9. Scion xB

The Scion xB was billed as a customizable car for youngin's, "The Scion xB's marketing is aimed at Generation Y, Americans born between 1980 and 1994" (Wikipedia). However, today, you are more likely to see mom-types (just like the aforementioned Beetle) than a Gen Y person. Just today I saw a mid-60s woman rolling around in her yellow Scion xB with Enkei rims. I forget... are 60-year-old women Generation Yers?

8. Saturn Astra

I am always bemoaning the fact that American car manufacturers seem to be following the herd as opposed to leading it (cf. The Ford Flex is Whack). This is a most egregious example. The Saturn Astra is made in Belgium by Opel and exported to the United States and sold as a so-called "American" car.

Maybe the worst thing about this is that the Astra has been a running joke in the UK for years (read: Top Gear) where it is known as the Vauxhall Astra. It is their police car and on one of the most recent episodes of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson was completely embarrassed by an American police-chase program because of the hideousness of the UK's police cars.

Good job GM! Way to bring one of the worst cars from overseas to America! Did I mention it is ugly?

7. Hummer

The Hummer hasn't always been uncool. I wanted one so bad when I was fifteen that I almost bought a military surplus Hum V for the princely sum of $5000 - that would have been a steal! However, with the rise of gas prices, the Hummer has become a pariah in the US. Just search Hummer on flickr and you will find no less than three people flipping off Hummers in pictures in the first few pages (just trust me on this one).

It is blatant consumption as one flickr user pointed out. Wouldn't a VW Golf be so much better to drive?

6. Toyota Prius

This selection is going to be controversial. A lot of people like the Prius. I have to admit that I have no problem with the car - well, it is a little ugly - but the drivers ruin this car. All one needs to do is watch the episode of South Park entitled, "Smug Alert", and one will find all the fodder ever needed to throw at the owners of this automobile.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a pretty cool guy, right? He drives a Prius; how can that make it bad? Leo likes to tell people how to live their lives. He has on occasion had a good thing to say, but he also flies in a private plane instead of commercial. If you don't know, that is really bad for the environment. That makes him a giant hypocrite.

I hate even writing about it. Prius owners are such kill-joys that I can't even have fun writing about what a lame car it is.

Prius owners just like the smell. That is all.

5. Chrysler 300

This is really hard for me to say: the Chrysler 300 is lame. There, I said it. It doesn't have to be lame but it is. First off, it is rubbish to drive. It can't turn at all. Second, it is reasonably fast, but not when one considers the size of the engine that it needs to push it to the speeds of which it is capable. That has nothing to do with why it is lame though. In fact, when Lee Iacocca said in GQ - "I have a Chrysler 300. Nice car. A fully loaded luxury car for $35,000. That’s a good value." - I agreed. $35,000 for a luxury car is a good value. That is the gateway to its lame demise though. The 300's drivers are able to buy one and still have cash for rims and accessories to make it look like a toy.

I wish I could just say the drivers are lame.

3. Ford Flex

In an earlier post I said: "The Ford Flex is another example of America not innovating, but reacting to Scion. Is this anything more than a design that was played-out two years ago when Scions stopped looking innovative?" We have already gone over Scion, Flex is too new for drivers to be annoying or a weird demographic. We'll have to wait to see how that pans out.

Here are the top three reasons this car is lame: 1) Ugly 2) Rubbish fuel economy 3) SUV that is useless off-road.

The PT Cruiser is the ugliest car in history. Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge has had a long history of making cars look dated really, really, quickly. Can you think of a Dodge design that has held up for more than a couple years? Maybe the Crossfire, but Benz helped with that. Every Dodge looks dated within two years. So CPD had an idea with the PT - "Let's make a car that looks dated RIGHT NOW! YEAH!" Well, my friends, they succeeded.

Are Rims Enough to Make a Car Whack? The short answer: Sometimes.

1. Almost Whack.

This Audi A6 is almost cool, almost whack. It is like the Laura San Giacomo of cars. You know, sometimes hot, sometimes ugly, depending on how you look at it. The fact is, if it weren't for the rims, it would be awesome. I love A6s - even the bubbly years like this.

2. Whack with Redemption Close at Hand.

It is no secret to anyone I know that I like Cadillacs a lot. This one is the wrong color, has a lame top, and then there are the rims. The rims send it over the edge, but it is only one click from nice. It is really unfortunate.

3. Honda Civic - Getting Really Whack.

Now we are getting somewhere. This car looks like a Micro Machine - small body, big wheels.

4. Whacktacular Ford Escort.

I promise this is not a well-staged Micro Machine. It is a real car.

Why is it that it seems American car manufacturers are always 'reacting' instead of 'enacting'. It is like we are always playing catch-up. Jeremy Clarkson, of Top Gear, asked a legitimate question a few years ago: "Why does it take a 400 cid (cubic inch displacement) engine for the American's to reach 400 bhp (brake horsepower)? BMW could do it with nearly half that.

The Ford Flex is another example of America not innovating, but reacting to Scion. Is this anything more than a design that was played-out two years ago when Scions stopped looking innovative?

From this angle it actually doesn't look that bad, but I have seen one in person - it looks like an overgrown Scion xB.

I wanted this car to be great. I am waiting for American manufacturers to meet the needs of their people, but this is not it.

Top Five Stupid Lifted Cars:

5. Lifted Smart

I think I may have seen this car on Top Gear. It had nothing resembling a Smart Car under the body. That said, this car is not smart at all.

4. Lifted VW Bus

I actually have very little problem with this. It is terrible, but the car is terrible in the first place. Plus it doesn't seem like a bad idea if you are going to work your farm with cheap equipment, a VW isn't a bad way to go. It is easy to lift the suspension and easy and cheap to maintain.

3. Lifted Toyota Camry

This is really stupid. I don't know what else to say. I owned a Camry. It was terrible. It was not lifted so it was not nearly as terrible as this.

2. Lifted Chevrolet Monte Carlo (?)

40" rims = stupid. 20" rims = stupid. 40" rims = 2x as stupid.

El Cajon Is Awesome, Part 3... (No, it isn't).

This is possibly the most shocking whack car I have ever found. Let me get a few things straight. I love Hondas. I love Honda Civics. I like tinted windows. But this car looks like it broke every one of California's Lemon Laws... and Ohio's, and Arizona's, and Illinois's, and Wisconsin's Lemon Laws. Notice that everything about this car is terrible.

1. This car is entirely too low.

While taking these pictures, I was actually afraid of what might happen if the owner came out - this is a BAD neighborhood. This is one of the worst neighborhoods in El Cajon, CA. Let's just say check-cashing and short-term money lending operations abound! I was thinking about it and custom rims and tires like these would be around $1500 - $2000 depending on quality. Then the lowering job (I have never had a car lowered, but I did have a suspension problem that cost me $800) would be about $500? Let's just round to $2400. If the owner would have taken that $200 per month for a year and put it into a better apartment, he wouldn't have had to live in the ghetto. $200 per month means a LOT in El Cajon.

The Millionaire Next Door talks about how millionaires (truly affluent Americans) don't generally buy Porsches, Ferraris, etc., they buy full-size American cars. In fact, they say that it is almost like millionaires buy cars by the pound! The book says that millionaires, on the whole, are frugal.

Even so, something tells me this guy is not a millionaire.

A Chevrolet Caprice would have been a good car by millionaire standards in 1984, but in 2008, it just looks like a money pit.

I like Suburu WRXs. I think they drive fantastic, they have an amazing build quality for the money, and they have owners that are often the biggest jerks anywhere in the sphere in which they live. I worked with this guy when I first left college, call him Lee. He was a lot of fun to hang out with, loved to get into trouble, and said things like, "Man! This brie is bumpin!" But he was a jerk. I could give all the reasons, but let's just leave it at that. He drove a WRX. That was my first experience with a WRX driver, but I have never had to eat my words. That said, I would love to have one. Being honest, I am probably a jerk. I do own this blog... *takes a long hard look at himself*. Nah!

This guy bumps his bass all over East San Diego and rattles my house's windows. He has a cool car, but...

The guy has an Oldsmobile Cutlass(?) and decides, "Hey, you know what would make my car look great? If I plastered Louis Vuitton emblems all over my $5 car." Good thinking.

If I completely understood whack-car culture, I would probably still own one.

Let's get something straight: I love (and hate) crappy cars that owners have 'tricked out'. They make me smile. One time, when I was in college, I had one of these so-called 'whack' cars. It was a 1987 Honda CRX HF that had about 2 horsepower and no muffler, but I had one heck of a stereo - to the tune of $2,000! I thought that was a race car.

I have dedicated my spare time and my own experience to bring you "yourcariswhack.com".

So what makes a car whack?

- Cheap car and/or unrespectable
- Excessive accessories
- Excessive paintwork
- Expensive rims
- Owner has to be trying to make his or her car 'sick'! Oh the irony!

I am sure as I work on this site, I will find more examples.
